Dream Team vs Team Avengers

1992 USA Basketball Roster: “Dream Team”

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the United States assembled a roster known as the “Dream Team”. This team contributed to the global popularity of basketball, especially outside of the United States. Each player was valuable as a diamond, but some players stand out as unforgettable, even after many years.

For example, Michael Jordan is considered one of the greatest players in NBA history. He was known for his exceptional skills both offensively and defensively, but initially, he declined the offer to join the team. Jordan, who didn’t want to be the only star, prompted the management to gather the best players, and they successfully convinced him to join. Jordan became the 10th player to accept the offer.

Magic Johnson, a legend known for his playmaking and creative games, was the first player offered a spot after Jordan declined. He accepted the offer without hesitation. In his own words, he confidently said, “I thought if I accepted, the other players would too,” and he was proven right.

Larry Bird, who struggled with back problems, might not have joined the “Dream Team.” However, as Magic Johnson predicted, when Bird heard about the team and spoke with Johnson, he realized it was their last chance to play together. We can say, “Good thing he realized,” because Bird scored the first basket in the Dream Team’s official games, assisted by Magic. The Dream Team not only consisted of talented players but also dominated the Olympics. This team transformed basketball globally and significantly contributed to the game’s universal appeal.

2024 USA Basketball Roster: “The Avengers”

For the 2024 Olympics, the USA basketball roster resembled a Marvel movie filled with superheroes. Some of these heroes, like the “Dream Team” players, will be remembered for years to come.

LeBron James, regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history, served as an important example for young players with his experience and leadership. He demonstrated this leadership when he described the roster as ‘The Avengers’ in an interview. We may not know if he’s the greatest, but he’s certainly among the best. Stephen Curry, who scored the most points for the USA with 24 in the final game, solidified his reputation as the best shooter in history with his clutch three-pointers in the closing moments of the match.

Kevin Durant, on the other hand, holds a record. He became the highest-scoring player in the history of USA men’s and women’s basketball at the Olympics. After winning the championship, Durant also became the first male athlete in Olympic history to win four gold medals in team sports.

Noah Lyles’ Comment

Famous American athlete Noah Lyles commented last year on the NBA championship by saying, “You know what hurts me the most? I watch the NBA Finals, and they have ‘world champion’ on their heads. World champion of what? The United States? Don’t get me wrong. I love the USA sometimes. But the world is not just America. We are the world. Here, almost every country is fighting and putting up their flag to show they are represented. I can’t see any flags in the NBA.” Following these comments, the USA basketball team was surprisingly eliminated in the semifinals of the 2023 World Cup. A year later, with a renewed team, they won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. While the “world champion” debate remains open to interpretation, it might not be entirely wrong to attach that title.

Comparison

It may not be entirely accurate to compare the two teams due to the differences in conditions, game philosophy, and the influence of social media at the time. The path to success for the Dream Team was easier compared to the 2024 team. However, we cannot ignore the impact of European basketball today. While the 1992 team faced only 9 NBA players, the 2024 team faced 61 NBA players. Despite struggling for a long time with Serbia’s outside shooting performance in the semifinals, they utilized the evolving game to their advantage with players like Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. Thus, LeBron James’ description of the team as ‘The Avengers’ was justified, especially with heroes emerging in difficult times.
