The Danish government has announced a law requiring women to serve in the military

The Danish Government announced a groundbreaking plan to include women in compulsory military service and to extend the duration of military service. While women can currently volunteer for military service, men are required to serve after the age of 18. Prime Minister Frederiksen of Denmark stated that this new plan will achieve complete gender equality, and compulsory military service for women will start being implemented from 2026. Norway and Sweden already require military training for women, making Denmark the third European country to do so. Under the current conditions, the duration of military service, which is 4 months, will be extended to 11 months for both men and women. Additionally, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, European countries have increased their defense budgets. The Danish Government aims to increase its military spending by 6 billion dollars over the next five years.
